Omaha poker is one of the many types of community poker games that people can play. While games like 5 card stud give you all the cards you need right in your own hand, community games like Omaha poker require you to use the cards that are placed facing up on the table to make the best hand possible. Texas hold ’em poker is the same way; the only real difference is in the number of cards you are dealt.

How Does Omaha Poker Work?
Omaha poker is played by anywhere from two to nine players. Each player is dealt four cards face down that can’t be seen by other players. These cards are called the hole cards. Once each player has their hole cards, the game begins.
The first round of betting takes place and the person who is sitting the closest to the dealer’s left places the small blind. The person sitting to the small blind’s left places the big blind. These are automatic bets that must be played in concurrence with each and every new round.
A chip called the dealer chip makes its way around the table so that every player takes their turn going through a cycle of playing the big blind and the small blind. The first player to the left of the big blind gets to have the first action in the hand. They can bet, call, or fold their hand at that point.
Once the first round of betting is complete, three cards will be placed face up on the table. These first three community cards are known together as the flop. After the flop has taken place, another round of betting occurs.
When the betting after the flop is completed, another card is turned face up on the table. This card is known as the turn. Players now have a better idea as to what their hand looks like and what the hands of other players might look like.
Another round of betting commences for the turn card. If there are still players involved in the hand, a fifth and final card is placed face up. This card is the river card, and it is the last chance for you to upgrade your hand.
How to Win Omaha Poker
In order to win your Omaha poker game, you can either take the best hand to the showdown or make everyone else fold their hands at some point during the betting. The showdown occurs after the river card appears and after every player has a chance to bet. You either want to be sure that you have the best hand or be able to convince the other players that you do, even if you don’t.
Due to the large hands involved, it’s advisable to avoid going for the win if you have smaller cards. Flushes and straights are very common, so you have to be careful when you’re just playing with pairs. Always remember that you can you use any two cards out of your four hole cards, but you must use just your choice of two.
